Spacious Listening

by Brenda Stanley
This was a thoughtful and thought-provoking class on how to improve not only listening skills that can be used in ministry for the benefit of others, but also to use personally to improve one's ability to listen and to absorb the messages from the "Real Master," the one within. As a Spiritual Director, one of the lynch-pin ideas I take away from this course is that concerning clutter--not only the usual ideas of what comprises clutter, i.e. that on the outside in our homes and in our environments; but also, the internal clutter that keeps us from being able to hear the messages that are meant for us. The idea that we are filled with internal clutter which takes up the interior space which should be open to receive--was new to me and presented convincingly. This course will change the way I approach spiritual direction sessions in the future.
